A girl child in India

In India our way of life, all those false notion, our traditions and rituals, causing for the existence of the Indian girl child. Despite the enforcement of gender equality and law, female infants are still found to be dumped in rural and in urban fetuses continued to be sniffed in the womb of mother. Needless to mention our society has dealt the girl child with a cruel hand and in most parts of our country the life of a girl child suffers in darkness.

Her eyes are bright but unprivileged, her heart is kind but sorrow, she looks forward for rest but disappointed.

We have enough reports to expose that thousands of sex determination tests are carried out across the private clinics in our country, and female infants have been reportedly killed every month.  Techniques such as Amniocentesis[1] that was introduced to identify genetic abnormalities of the fetuses has become a tool for sex determination and death of the unborn female fetuses.

Key Causes: Poverty, Social Stigma

The feelings of disapproval and illness, that people have towards a female baby in Indian family is the key cause of this issue.
In India 75% of people reside in rural, and an estimated 350-400 are below the poverty line. Consequently there is a direct linkage between poverty and degradation of the health, education, development, early marriage and independence issues of a girl child in India.

The most crucial reasons for the ignorance of a female child could be broadly classified as:

- Female is threat of dowry

- Male baby is considered to be ideal for the expansion of family thread

- Male baby is regarded as the backbone of the support system in India

Remedial Measures

Education is the only light at the end of the tunnel to overcome this difficult situation. It will help women be independent economically and also enable the mothers of the girl child to understand how unpleasant the act is! But we have a long way to go and several agencies need to get together as well as do it across every nook and corner of the country.

What we need is serious administrative measures that would encourage this process to develop more quickly. No individual efforts or NGO movements could bring this ill issue to an end without the strong actions from the administrative departments. The dream will come true only through result-oriented action plans by the government.
